The sound of the dribbling ball and squeaky shoes filled the gym as the girls’ varsity basketball team took on Bear River, Dec. 8. The girls defeated the Bears, 66-25.

“We’re looking to create a chaos that we thrive in, but makes other teams uncomfortable,” Katrina Nham said.

In a rocky start to the season, the varsity team lost a scrimmage to Granite Bay, but redeemed themselves by winning their first game against Bear River. Although the team started off shaky with a loss against Granite Bay, they are determined to continue to work hard and become a stronger team.

With seven returning seniors, two juniors, and two freshman on the team, Nham is positive that their goal of playing into March will be achieved. However, the girls get heavily prepared as they take on the Oakmont and Del Oro tournament in the upcoming weeks.

“Being able to play in the [Del Oro tournament] will be a very big obstacle because being able to compete in that level of competition is huge,” Alanna Scott said.

Del Oro currently has a 3-1 record, making them one of the top competitors of this league.

Head coach Sydney Gatson and assistant coach Kylee Keroher are confident that even though they are in a new and more competitive league, the girls will be able to defeat teams through hard work and effort at practices.

“I expect that [the girls] will do everything in their power to reach their goal of winning league. More than anything I expect to truly enjoy these players that I’ve grown to love, and more importantly, who have grown to love each other tremendously,” Gatson said.

The girls’ next game is Dec.13 at Oakmont and their Quarry Classic game against Rocklin is Dec. 16th, home.
