On Jan. 27 the varsity boys’ wrestling team lost against Cosumnes Oaks 38-31.

The Wildcats landed a total of three pins by Cole Kachmar, Jacob Schroeder and Nikolas Terpstra.

In spite of the takedown at the start of the match, Schroeder managed to escape and pin his opponent at the one-minute mark.

This is an example of why Rachel Meskimen a stat girl for Whitney enjoys wrestling.

“Things can turn around at any minute and you never know who’s going to win,” Meskimen said.

Despite his turnaround, Terpstra’s match managed to lay claim as the highlight of the meet. Terpstra took down his opponent in one maneuver and pinned him in 20 seconds flat.

Whitney held this lead until the 170 lbs. weight class match.

Cosumnes Oaks’ Flores scored 15 consecutive points against Whitney’s Austin Eggers resulting in a technical fall. A technical fall occurs when a wrestler gains a 15 or more point lead resulting in an automatic win and five points are awarded to the winning wrestler’s team.

“The last match, when Maas and Ricci went head to head, was the most exciting match of the meet,” Meskimen said.

This match was the deciding factor between which team would win and lose. Whitney’s Curtis Maas was pinned by Cosumnes Oaks’ Ricci with 43 seconds left in the first period.

“We were so close to winning, but we played our best,” Terrie Tran a girl varsity wrestler said.

The next meet will take place Feb. 3 at home against Del Campo at 6 p.m.
