As fall sports start league play, the all-sports competition begins as well. The all-sports competition is a contest in the Capital Valley Conference in which points are given out for the placing each varsity team receives in their respective sport.

First place receives eight points while last place gets one point. The prize for winning this competition is a six-foot trophy that has the names of the past winners engraved  on it. Bella Vista has won the past eight competitions and Whitney is looking to break their streak and win it.

The Wildcats came in second place last year, only losing by 20 points and they are looking to improve upon that place this year.

“I think we have a great shot this year, especially since some of our teams last year who did not do so well have really stepped up and accepted the challenge of playing in a division two league,” athletic director Mr. Jason Feuerbach said.

The football team did not make the playoffs last year and did not contributed as much points for the competition as hoped. But this year, varsity has three wins and only one loss, and a making a push for the playoffs.

“Football is going to do really good this year because the new way we set up our offense and defense is really helpful, ”Varsity football player Dagne Buck said.

On the other hand, cross country finished first in league last year and gained eight points for the competition. The team has finished in the top 10 for each of their meets this year and look to continue their hot streak.

“I think we will do really well this year as long as we work hard and as a team and try in practice,” cross country runner Andrew Franco said.

While these athletes compete for their teams to win at their sport, they realize that they are also helping the entire athletic program in achieving success as well.

“That is really is something, that feels really good helping the athletic department move up,” Buck said.

The fall sports are not the only teams to contribute points though, as the winter and spring sports did well last year and look to do the same this year.

Feuerbach said, “If the teams can do as well as they did last year, we should be in pretty good shape to bring it home to Whitney.”
