Award season recognizes the best in film, television and music. However, it also gives celebrities an opportunity to show off their best abilities in another field: fashion. Whatever they choose to wear is analyzed by fashion houses like Vogue, Marie Claire and Vanity Fair.

These looks foreshadow the trends for prom season. Solid dresses, high-neck lines and florals were all huge trends at the Jan. 10 Golden Globes and are making their way onto prom boutique websites like Sherri Hill and PromGirl.

Simplicity is the number one trend in red-carpet fashion so far this year.

Color-blocking, solids and slim fit cuts are what most celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Amy Schumer and Taraji P. Henson, showed off at the Golden Globes. This transition from patterned gowns, a huge trend last year, to more simplistic outfits benefited a lot of celebrities.

Solid color gowns compliment more body types, slimming down figures and not drawing attention to unwanted zones. Simple, color-blocked gowns also tend to be cheaper for high schoolers on budgets.

The few patterns that surfaced on celebs like Jenna Dewan Tatum and Maggie Gyllenhaal had very floral undertones. While the floral decor wasn’t as common on the red-carpet as it is in certain prom boutiques like Sherri Hill, it will be big in this prom season. Red carpet looks featured a more abstract approach to traditional floral patterns however most prom dresses will be made from traditional floral looks.

Focusing more on the build of the dress, high neck lines and wrap-arounds were another huge trend on the red carpet as seen on celebrities like Kate Winslet and Jennifer Lopez. Halter dresses are big in prom shops this season. While most necklines won’t be as extreme as red carpet looks, they are an easy way to have backless gown without showing too much skin.

Since prom season is approaching, most in-store prom shops are beginning to receive dresses. Windsor and Macy’s have larger stock of dresses, allowing for more variety in size, color and design.

Junior Prom is April 16 and Senior Ball is May 14.
