Platinum League introduces a new type of trading card

Photo provided by Platinum League

Stop for a second, and think back to the good ol’ days. You know, the days of Tamagotchis and snap bracelets, Barbie and Hot Wheels. Oh, and don’t forget Pokemon — don’t even pretend you didn’t watch it religiously, tossing your plastic Pokeballs from Burger King around like you were the Pokemon master. And let’s not even get started on the trading cards. How many holographic Charizards did you have? A lot. Trading cards are generally reminiscent of childhoods, whether it be baseball, Pokemon, Yugioh, whatever. But now, Platinum League has started a whole new line of trading cards that may revolutionize the way we remember trading cards all together.

Available at Walmart, Target, Best Buy and Hot Topic, these cards are $3.79 a pack, around the same price as a pack of any other trading cards. You can’t really “battle” with these cards, they just have info on the artist, like their name, record label, hometown and date of birth. Each card has a QR code that can be scanned to receive special content from the artist as well. However, to get this content, you must download the League Media Player app.

The artists featured range from Snoop Dogg, Tupac and Biggie to smaller artists like Mindless Behavior and Cori B. A hundred artists will be made into cards, and a select few have been autographed as well.

But here’s the coolest part: each pack of cards has a prize card, that guarantees a prize, whether it be a ringtone or concert tickets. Each card allows you to enter the grand sweepstakes as well. And what’s the prize? A 2012 Chevy Camaro.

But are these cards really worth it? Not really, unless you’re really big in the rap and hip hop music scene. Even then, do you want to “hurt your rep” by having binders full of trading cards? Probably not.
