Student vs. Staff basketball preview

In the ultimate rematch, students will face off March 24 against their teachers, trying to overturn last year’s staff victory. The staff is currently 2-0 and has not had a student team come close to beginning them in previous years. Beginning March 22, students will be selling tickets at lunch in the amphitheater for the Staff vs. Student Basketball Fundraiser game on March 24. The fundraiser’s earnings will go towards senior scholarships. In 2009 the game raised about $2220 and this year assistant principal Mr. Mark Williams hopes to raise at least $3,000.

The game officially starts at 6:30 and will run through two halves, one for the women’s game and one for the men’s. The women’s game will consist of 15 minute halves with a running clock, while the men’s game will consist of four 10 minute quarters. During the halftime show of the men’s game there will be a performance by the drill team and also members of the staff. Before the game each player will be introduced with lights, video and an entry song.

The basketball games will take place in the main gym and will consist of four teams. There will be a male and female staff team and a male and female student team. There will be two timeouts per half of each game and there will be no foul outs. Shooting fouls will automatically be two points for the other team and if the shot is made it will count as three points. In the last two minutes of the game, free throws will be required for shooting fouls. Student basketball player Jon Cardenas knows that the game will be a huge success due to all of the preparation that has been done.

“The staff might have a huge size advantage, but we have been practicing and are ready to take them on,” Cardenas said.

There will be a raffle drawing in the middle of both games for a chance to win free prizes. The tickets will be sold by students throughout the games for $2 each. The announcers for the game will be Neil Sunseri and Jason Knowles, while the referees will consist of Patrick Floyd and Joel Williams. The cheer team will be present during the whole game, as well as a small staff Pep Band headed by Mrs. Janice Stadler, Mr. Dan Parker, Mr. Kris Harper, and Mrs. Melanie Patterson. Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Williams knows that the competition will be easy to roll over.

“They don’t have a chance,” Williams said.

Tickets will be sold for $3 during a pre-sale on March 22-24 during school and $5 at the door. As both opponents prepare for the big game, there will be only one victor.
