On Aug. 6, seniors gather together to paint each of their own personalized parking spots. The event ran from 1 to 5 p.m. and was organized with the help of new activities director, Mr. Jesse Armas. “The students showed up at 1:00, which made it kind of hectic. Luckily, I had the help of the class officers and Mr. [Patrick] Gale as well. Hopefully it was a good time for them and one of the first memorable experiences for their senior year,” Armas said.

What it’s really like to be a single teen mom

YOUNG EXPLORATION. Following their special stage, six young students receive certificates and recognition for embarking upon their beginning piano-study journeys. Each student played a self-composed piece and performed rhythmic compositions. That was their first time in front of an audience in a musical type setting. I think that is one of the best things -- for them to see older students perform. I think, for them, it was a new experience having the opportunity to sit at the piano and play their creations. They now know its okay to be creative and explore, Smith said.

GREAT ACCLAMATION. For the conclusion of the recital, students of all ages bow after receiving certificates and gift bags recognizing their tremendous efforts. The 2:00 PM recital had performers of all skills and ages, each performing two to three songs. I was very pleased with how everyone did. Its difficult to get in front of a group of people; especially people that you do not see all the time and may have never seen before, instructor Janice Smith said.

GOING BAROQUE. To correspond to the spring recital’s overarching theme, the photo booth includes items such as a world map and composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s wig constructed of stripped toilet paper rolls. The recital happened to take place on Earth Day, and many of the repertoire selections were centered around the musical baroque era.

NOTES OF PRAISE. Immediately following the recitals conclusion, a parent writes a special congratulatory note dedicated for a student in praise of their playing. At the back table of the performance venue, parents and relatives were able to write compliments on cards to any student(s) they wished to commend and applaud.

LAST REVIEW. Prior to the recital’s start, students review their music one last time while conversing with fellow peers and relatives. Many of the participants would be performing their pieces again the following week for the CAPMT Student Evaluations at Sacramento State, where they are required to memorize two of three songs and complete a theory test.

MUSIC FOR ALL. As a special performance during the midway point of the recital, Janice Smith leads the special stage alongside young students in the KiddyKeys program. KiddyKeys was specially designed for children aged three to five, and it placed special emphasis in teaching the beginning concepts of music.
