The ‘MAMA’ no one expects

A rating of PG-13 would not be the first rating that comes to mind after seeing the movie “Mama.”Filled with suspenseful scenes, this movie did manage to impress me.this movie focuses on a family affected by the poor economy, which causes one man to snap, killing two of his co-workers and his wife. He quickly takes his two daughters on a drive. Overcome with anxiety, he crashes his car and ends up roaming through the forest, only to stumble upon and abandoned cabin.

This movie is not the type of movie for people who do not enjoy scary movies. In my opinion, “Mama” is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen. The director, Andres Muschietti, created exquisite characters so each scene would leave the viewers immersed in the plot. For such a young age, the oldest sister Victoria (Megan Carpenter) is such an amazing actor. You wouldn’t believe that she is only 7 years old. The same goes for the youngest sister Lily (isabelle Nelisse). They both take up such a main part in the movie, you could almost say those two are far better actors than Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays the girls’ uncle, Lucas. Although he played a big role in the film Lily and Victoria were the strongest actresses.

While roaming through the forest, two men stumble upon the abandoned cabin. If walking into the creepy cabin wasn’t bad enough, they were greeted by two beast like little girls scrambling about like wild animals on all fours. At this point of the movie you start to see the transformation of these two little girls that have been alone in a cabin for five years.

After months of therapy the two girls are soon brought to live with their uncle, his girlfriend and to fall under the care of a local psychiatrist. Throughout the movie I think the role of the uncle “Lucas” could have been played a little better. Though the uncle’s role is pivotal in the whole scheme of the movie, his character is not strong enough to demand the audience’s attention. The uncles girlfriend “Annabel,” played by Jessica Chastain, was a strong character that developed well throughout the movie. Starting out as a stubborn, punk rock kind of woman, she slowly develops as one of the more important characters, caring for and taking on the role of the two little girls’ mother.

Overall I think the movie “Mama” was a fairly good movie. The plot of the movie was very thrilling;it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole film, it kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. Filled with suspense and horror, this movie is one you would want to see if you are looking for some excitement. But be prepared to have long restless nights filled with wonders if “Mama” is hiding in your walls.
