Sweets For Reads members host summer-themed reading event at Rock Creek Elementary

After planning for the event since early May, Sweets For Reads hosted an event at Rock Creek Elementary School May 23 in order to promote reading over the summer to students. The kids were encouraged to create a summer reading bookmark with colored paper, crayons and markers. Following, students picked out donated books to bring home, read in small circle groups and received treats at the end.

While monitoring the bookmark-making station, I got to bond with one of the older kids about what she was creating. I complimented her bookmark and then moved on to help other kids pick out books; later, she came up to me and gave me a bookmark that matched hers. I find it really rewarding being able to give back to the community and to share the love of reading,” vice president Elisha Tapangan said.

Throughout the school year, Sweets For Reads has worked to improve literacy rates and reading enjoyment within elementary school students. On Feb. 7, the club hosted a “Little Book Shop” at Sunset Ranch Elementary in order to distribute over 80 donated books to kids.

Samara Camacho said, “It was so rewarding for all the members involved to see all the work we’ve put in this school year come to life. This event turned out to be a success and I can’t wait to host more events like this in other elementary schools next school year.”
